Chicas in charge

Kelly Lopez, Marlene Cabrera, and Ana Villaman have a dream that without fail will be noticed. A dream that has the potential to make the dreams of other young Latinas possibilities. Lopez, a student at Temple University, took a grant-writing class that required her to write a grant as her final project.

She wanted to give back to her community; give her community something that it was in dire need of. Being the leader she is, she took the initiative to the Department of Health to tackle the issue affecting the community at its worst. With teen pregnancy being the issue at hand, Lopez knew what needed to be done.

Lopez worked hard with the Co-County Wellness. Services (CCWS) Center to come up with a plan and program to help eliminate and prevent teen pregnancy. "When I interviewed with CCWS for an internship, they asked what I had been working on, and I showed them my grant," Lopez said.

"It turned out that the program that I created and the Chicas in Charge program that they were trying to develop meshed very well. They offered me a chance to pilot the program in the Glenside community, my old neighborhood.

"The program is geared to show how your future and goals can be affected by poor sexual decision-making, which can lead to teen pregnancy, STDs [sexually transmitted diseases], HIV, etc."
