Conference Motivates Youngsters to Excel


For 18 years, young Latinas in the eastern San Fernando Valley have been motivated to achieve their goals and excel in their lives during the annual Adelante Mujer Latina Conferences.

But there was nothing similar for males, not until this past weekend when some 400 male students gathered in Panorama City for the first ever Adelante Hombre Latino Summit, where they received motivation and information to reach their dreams.

"We thought it was something that was needed," said Alex Reza, one of the organizers of the event. "For 18 years there's been an Adelante Mujer Latina conference but there's never been anything comparable for males, so we thought it was time to support young men.

"As a group, young Latino women are doing much better than men," he added. The conference, titled "Facing the Future with Pride and Courage," held at Panorama High School in Panorama City this past Saturday, meant to change that. Students from this high school, as well as San Fernando, Sylmar, Kenndy and Discovery Charter packed the school for a day of workshops, speeches and information sessions meant to help them in their future.
