La Casa Norte, a leader in serving homeless youth and families in need from the Humboldt Park community, has issued a challenge to Chicagoans to get involved in “National Volunteer Week” - April 18 thru April 24 - by donating time to benefit those who are homeless or at risk for it. “There can be no doubt that we live in difficult times,” says Sol Flores, Executive Director, La Casa Norte. “The staggering numbers of families affected by joblessness, homelessness, and other difficulties increases daily -- there’s never been a more important time than now to get involved.”

“In 2003, Chicago became one of the few cities in America to develop a comprehensive plan to end homelessness. Our goal was to find new ways to prevent homelessness and help turn around the lives of those who are homeless,” said Mayor Richard M. Daley. Volunteerism sends a powerful message – people helping people to make our cities better places to live, work and raise a family. That’s the message La Casa Norte carries around Chicago. It is why the City of Chicago is pleased to be part of this great effort to bring new energy and new ideas to the service movement during National Volunteer Week.”

La Casa Norte, in partnership with MEGA 95.5, NBC Chicago, Telemundo Chicago, and Zapatista Mexican Grill, offers 4 easy ways for interested Chicagoans to get involved during National Volunteer Week:

1. Participate in a collection drive underway during the week for toiletry items to benefit those who are homeless (from shampoo to deodorant to soap). You can drop off these items Monday thru Friday, between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., at NBC/Telemundo TV Studios, 454 N. Columbus Drive, Chicago, IL 60611;

2. Get involved in Mega Radio’s Unidad Móvil (for dates, times and locations), please visit http://www.mega955.com/ keyword VOLUNTEER.

3. Patronize Zapatista Mexican Grill restaurants in Chicago or Northbrook during the week and a percentage of proceeds will be donated to La Casa Norte. (www.zapatistamexicangrill.com)

4. Or, simply come up with some innovative/interesting volunteer ideas and post them on the wall of La Casa Norte’s Facebook page during the month of April! A panel of judges will review submissions and the most innovative ideas will win tickets to the May 5th Chicago White Sox game.

La Casa Norte has received numerous awards for its housing program “Solid Ground” – Chicago’s first bilingual, multicultural supportive, housing program for young men. This program is the only program for Latino and African American youth who are most at risk for the trauma that leads to violent behavior, poor social skills, and mental health difficulties.
