Unacculturated Hispanics more likely to contract HIV/AIDS

Hispanics in Los Angeles County who are not adapted to American culture are more likely to contract the HIV virus, which causes AIDS, according to a study conducted by UCLA researchers. The 600 Hispanics surveyed were recruited from L.A. County sexually transmitted disease clinics, community-based organizations, and needle exchange programs, said Enrique Rivero, a UCLA spokesman. The researchers, who are attached to UCLA's Division of General Internal Medicine and Health Services, found that Hispanics in Los Angeles County with low levels of acculturation had taken fewer HIV tests and no Hepatitis C tests, were more likely to test positive for HIV and had little access to health care, according to Rivero. "Interventions must be developed that address the cultural and behavioral differences among Hispanics, who are disproportionately affected by HIV/AIDS," Rivero said in a statement. READ FULL STORY
