Ida Eblinger Kelley called Hispanic (she used the term interchangeably with "Latino") education "the civil rights issue " of our time. Hispanic students -- at OCPS and nationwide -- are the largest minority group in schools, yet they consistently lag behind in test scores as well as graduation and college entrance rates. As the Obama administration undertakes what it calls a massive education reform effort, those issues can no longer be ignored, she said. Parents and educators alike must be "more vigorous in demanding that Hispanic students get and excellent education," she said before her opening remarks at the Parent Leadership Council's annual training meeting Saturday at the Rosen Plaza Hotel.
