Hispanics getting fast Web access to go

U.S. Hispanics are among the most avid users of smartphones and other mobile high-speed Internet devices, according to a report released today by The Hispanic Institute, a nonprofit based in our nation's capital. According to the institute, about 53 percent of the nation's 48 million Hispanics use mobile broadband technology, compared with 33 percent of whites. "Broadband access is closely aligned with economic advancement and a wide array of social benefits," Gus West, the institute's board chairman, said in an e-mail today. The report suggested Hispanics are more mobile and younger than other demographic groups in the U.S. In addition, many come from countries where wireless service is more common than landline phones. "This familiarity makes the leap to smartphones and other connected mobile devices a more intuitive step for many than turning to wired, home broadband adoption and computer usage," the organization reported.
