Latino Credit Union celebrates its 10 year anniversary

On May 23, 2010, the Latino Community Credit Union (LCCU) will celebrate its 10 year anniversary in an event open to the Credit Union’s members. The event will be hosted in the Durham Armory and will have as main speakers Ms. Gabriela Zabala, Director of the Office of Hispanic/Latino Affairs for the NC governor’s office, and Mr. Carlos Flores Vizcarra, Consul General of Mexico in Raleigh.

Latino Credit Union celebrates 10 years of providing a full range of affordable and accessible financial services and education to the North Carolina community, with a focus on Latinos and other underserved populations. Throughout this decade, LCCU has been characterized for being the fastest growing community development credit union in the country serving over 54,000 members, many of whom are low-income and previously unbanked.

The Credit Union has continued opening branches to increase convenience for current members and reach out to more people in need of financial services and education; LCCU now has 10 branches across the state in Durham, Carrboro (opened in April 2010), Raleigh, Garner, Winston-Salem, Greensboro, Charlotte (East and South), Fayetteville, and Monroe (coming soon). LCCU was first created as an innovative response to a wave of violence against the Latino community due to the perception that they were carrying cash or keeping it in their homes.

Local community advocates and credit union industry leaders came together to create LCCU: a place where Latinos feel at home with employees who speak their language and know their culture as well as offer affordable and accessible products and services, designed to meet their specific needs.
