It is with great sadness that the NAHP Board of Directors shares news of the loss of a dear colleague and friend, NAHP President Ezequiel "Zeke" Montes. Mr. Montes passed away Tuesday, January 29, 2013, from complications due to pneumonia, surrounded by his family. He is survived by his wife and business partner of more than 40 years, Rosalinda; children, Patricia, Christine, Edward, and Esteban, and many grandchildren. The NAHP family offers our sincerest condolences and prayers for the family in this difficult time.

Montes was the CEO and President of Tele Guia Inc., the holding company for three successful Spanish language publications in the greater Chicago Area: Tele Guia de Chicago, El Imparcial Newspaper, and Guia Telefonica. Started in 1985, with a Spanish language TV Guide and entertainment magazine the business grew to nine magazines covering a five-county area. In 1999, he acquired his second publication, El Imparcial, a Cicero and Berwyn based Spanish language newspaper to ensure that the Hispanic community was and continues to be well-informed about their schools and government. In 2006, Montes launched Guia Telefonica, a Spanish language yellow page directory.

Mr. Montes made it a priority in his personal and professional life to help the Latino community, organizing the Latino Book and Family Festival to promote literacy and education to the approximately 25,000 annual attendees. He also served on the Board of Directors for organizations such as the Norwegian American Hospital, the Cicero Chamber of Commerce, the Hispanic Association on Corporate Responsibility, the National Hispanic Media Council, and the National Hispanic Leadership Council. He also previously chaired the Outreach Committee for the American Cancer Society of Illinois, served on a Blue Ribbon Advisory Committee for Morton College, and served as a District Chair for the Chippewa District of the Boy Scouts.

Mr. Montes also had a long and storied leadership role with the National Association of Hispanic Publications, serving as National Board President from 1986-1989, 1999-2003, and finally from 2011-Present, having been elected President by his peers in six different elections. Montes also served in various leadership roles for the organization in between his terms as President. He also served on the Board of Directors for the NAHP partner organization, the National Hispanic Press Foundation. Mr. Montes just helped NAHP celebrate 30 Years of Excellence in Hispanic Print, and in his words at the 2012 NAHP Annual Convention and Business Expo,: "We are a family of publishers that believe in the principles of journalism, business opportunity and giving back to the community." He will be missed greatly by his publishing family across the country.

There has been an outpouring of condolences and fond memories for Mr. Montes, particularly from NAHP members.

Clara Padilla Andrews, Immediate Past President of NAHP, said, "I am very sad to hear about the death of our NAHP President, Zeke Montes. I will miss his smile, energy and his commitment to the Hispanic media industry, may he rest in Peace. My heartfelt condolences to his wife Rose, his children Christine, Edward, and Esteban and grandchildren."

And NAHP Founder Kirk Whisler said, "While others have devoted meaningful time to the NAHP and the development of Hispanic Print - Zeke devoted his life. Over the years Zeke and I traveled together to over 50 cities around the USA and Mexico to talk about the many benefits and qualities of Hispanic Print. Zeke always provided the emotions and honesty that came from his years as a publisher. He wanted the tide to raise ALL the boats, was never happy if only a few were going to succeed. Zeke was truly a WE person, not a ME person."

When information on services or how to send condolences to the family of Zeke Montes becomes available, the NAHP office will share it. Please contact the NAHP Office at ed@nahp.org to receive the information.

Young adults in Generation X are as likely to connect with friends, family and co-workers online as they are in person, according to a University of Michigan study.

In a typical month, adults in their late 30s report that they engaged in about 75 face-to-face contacts or conversations, compared to about 74 electronic contracts through personal emails or social media.

"Given the speed of emerging technologies, it is likely that electronic contacts will continue to grow in the years ahead, eventually exceeding face-to-face interactions," said Jon D. Miller, author of the latest issue of The Generation X Report. "But the young adults in Generation X are currently maintaining a healthy balance between personal and electronic social networking."

Miller directs the Longitudinal Study of American Youth at the U-M Institute for Social Research. The study has been funded by the National Science Foundation since 1986, and the current report includes responses from 3,027 Gen Xers interviewed in 2011. READ MORE

Fifth Third Bank Chicago announces plans for its annual “Veterans Day of Appreciation” event on Monday, November 12, 2012.  The bank will transform the Great Hall of Union Station (Canal & Jackson, Chicago) into a patriotic celebration for those serving in the military.

The event is open to the public and will feature meet and greets with area veterans organizations, ongoing live patriotic musical performances, and an afternoon rally.  The day’s schedule is as follows:

· 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.:  Volunteers will join local veterans in collecting last minute donations for educational scholarships that will benefit the Folds of Honor Foundation.  Street teams will be out in Chicago and other suburban locations collecting donations.  The bank will match all donations received 100 percent, up to $50,000.

· 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.:  Volunteers will assemble 1,000 care packages that will be sent to Illinois troops now serving in Afghanistan.  Several of the items contained in the care packages are from Chicago-based companies.  This effort was inspired by local veteran group Heart of a Marine Foundation.  www.heartofamarine.org The public is invited – and encouraged – to come to the event and visit Appreciation Stations that will be set up where they can write notes of support and appreciation that will go into the soldiers care packages.

· 2 p.m. – 3 p.m.:  Fifth Third Bank will host an “Appreciation Rally,” where local veterans groups will be celebrated and spotlighted.  Special guest Rear Admiral David F. Steindl (Great Lakes Naval Base) will join civic and business leaders speaking at the event.  Highlights of the rally include:

· The bank will present a check for $100,000 from its month-long fundraising campaign to the Folds of Honor Foundation that will fund scholarships of Chicago-area families of wounded or lost soldiers.  www.foldsofhonor.org

· The bank will announce that in partnership with local non-profit, War Dogs Making It Home, it will sponsor a dog named Friday, recently rescued from a local animal shelter, to become trained as a certified service dog for local veteran suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.  http://wardogsmakingithome.org/

· Sending off the 1,000 care packages for their journey to Afghanistan.  United States Postal Service (USPS) employees, who are veterans themselves, will be on hand to help.  Volunteers and event guests will form a human chain that will move all the care packages onto waiting USPS trucks.

“Every single person who lives in the United States benefits from the hard work, commitment and sacrifice of our nation's soldiers," said Robert A. Sullivan, President & CEO, Fifth Third Bank (Chicago).  "We're excited to invite the community to join us in demonstrating our gratitude to those who serve in the military through our fundraising campaign and related events."

The Warriors Running Group was started by Joseph N Sobus to bring people of different backgrounds who shared a common passion for running. The Warriors is a free running group that promotes healthy living, supports various charities and local businesses. This is the first running group to represent the Latino community and the Pilsen community in the 2011 Chicago Marathon.

There has been many inspiring moments for this season ranging from seeing our members on the Marathon’s billboards to having everyone in the group reaching their goals. Collectively, we have raised thousands of dollars for charities like Children’s Memorial, Back on Your Feet, Special Olympics and Susan Komen foundation. The thing that we are most proud of this season we have created a group with no hidden agendas other than to help others to reach their goals.

Next season, we will be breaking our group into two different teams: one that will be focusing on the Chicago Marathon and the other that will training for the Men’s Health Urbanathon.

We would like to thank our sponsors but most of all Second Federal Saving Bank for creating our team uniform. The Warriors would like to invite everyone to cheer us on at the finish line and join us next season.

Filming a controversial journey

Lugging little more than their clothing, four Hispanic children rushed toward a green 1978 Bonneville to continue their race across Texas. They were evading immigration and law enforcement authorities for fear of being separated from one another and their only caretaker, an adult brother who is also an illegal immigrant. And then the director shouted, “Cut!” It was another scene in Pasadena resident Baldemar Rodriguez’s first feature film, El Nacional. He is the director, a lead actor, co-producer and writer of this movie that follows siblings running from the law after their undocumented parents are arrested. READ FULL STORY

Hispanic culture takes center stage in Milton

Hector Martinez strummed a guitar near Broadway Avenue as people strolled around with plates of cheese-covered nachos and rice and beans Saturday at the second annual Fiesta de Mayo. “It’s a good way to be part of the community,” Martinez, 19, of Milton said. Organized by Joe and Maggie Rosa, pastors of Congregacion Menonita Shalom in New Columbia, the festival is a chance for the large local Hispanic and Latino community to share their culture with Valley residents. “We want to get people to mingle, for people to learn a little bit,” Joe Rosa said. Sharing food, music and information about Hispanics and Latinos is a way to bring the groups together, he said, and hopefully redefine a community that is often stereotyped. READ FULL STORY

Hispanics embrace House SCHIP vote

Hispanic voters turned out in droves last fall to elect Barack Obama and his Democratic allies on Capitol Hill. Those allies get their first chance to return the favor on Wednesday when the House takes up a children’s health care measure that would grant Medicaid coverage to children of new immigrants whose families came to the U.S. legally. The immigration status of Treasury nominee Timothy Geithner’s former housekeeper might dominate the headlines, but this House vote has a much deeper impact on the country’s immigrant population and could set the tone for future debates. “We really believe that this is the first opportunity for the president-elect and the Congress to demonstrate their commitment to the Latino community,” said Jennifer Ngandu, a spokeswoman for the National Council of La Raza.
