The National Museum of Mexican Art presents: Elena Poniatowska Sharing the Stories of the Tlatelolco Massacre 40 Years Ago: Ensuring the Past is Not Forgotten Saturday, October 4, 2008 at 6pm 1852 W. 19th Street, Chicago, IL. For more information on this free event, please call 312-738-1503 or visit www.nationalmuseumofmexicanart.org Join us for a discussion with Elena Poniatowska, renowned Mexican journalist, professor and author best known for her 1971 work La noche de Tlatelolco (Massacre in Mexico), in which she relates her interviews with survivors and families of the student demonstrators killed ten days prior to the 1968 Summer Olympics by the Mexican government in the Tlatelolco massacre. Elena will share stories regarding the massacre and the families she interviewed. This year’s Day of the Dead exhibition, La Vida Sin Fin, is dedicated to the those killed by the Mexican government in the Tlatelolco massacre of Mexico City, 40 years ago. Elena Poniatowska was born in Paris in 1932 to Prince Jean Evremont Poniatowski Sperry, a descendant of the brother of King Stanislaus II of Poland, and Paula Amor-Escadón. Elena fled France during World War II and moved to Mexico with her family as a child. She studied in the United States and returned to Mexico in 1953 to start her career as a journalist. Elena’s journalism and writing explore and grapple with major events. Her works also include Hasta no verte Jesús mio, Tinísima, a biography about Tina Modotti, the Italian photographer, Nothing, Nobody, Paseo de la Reforma, and Cartas de Alvaro Mutis. Poniatowska is the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including a Guggenheim Fellowship and an Emeritus Fellowship from Mexico’s National Council of Culture and Arts. In 1979, she became the first woman to win the Mexican national award for journalism. Recently, Poniatowska has taught courses in creative writing, literature, journalism and translation. Her writing has been translated into numerous languages including English, French, Italian, German, Danish and Dutch. Elena Poniatowska currently lives in Mexico.
