Join Claudia Guadalupe Martinez for her first ever Chicago reading and to celebrate the release of her YA novel, THE SMELL OF OLD LADY PERFUME, this summer. Refreshments will be provided. This event is open to the public, About the Book: Chela Gonzalez is a nerd and a soccer player who can barely contain her excitement about her last year of elementary school. But nothing happens as she imagines-her father is rushed to the hospital and her best friend turns on her. When Chela's grandmother arrives to help the family, the smell of her old lady perfume invades the house. It is a smell worse than Sundays. Sundays are sad, except they go just as sure as they come; but death is a whole other thing, and Chela doesn't understand that's what everyone is waiting for. Booklist says that readers will "find the book's loving portrayal of Chela's family, its nicely realized setting, and its artful exploration of the problems of assimilation to be both engaging and heartfelt." School Library Journal calls it "a sweet coming-of-age story, telling of the cruelties of children toward one another and dealing with the loss of a parent." About the Author: Claudia Guadalupe Martinez grew up in Texas, and wrote her debut novel after moving to Chicago. She currently works for a non-profit dedicated to improving the educational experiences provided to Chicago's public elementary school children.
