Group targets Latinos for Fiorina

An independent conservative group is planning to spend seven figures in California to help Republican Senate candidate Carly Fiorina compete among Latino voters as she challenges Democratic Sen. Barbara Boxer this fall.

The Latino Partnership for Conservative Principles, a wing of the conservative not-for-profit American Principles Project, is poised to unveil a million-dollar independent expenditure plan to boost Fiorina.

Alfonse Aguilar, who heads the group, says it has already raised more than $500,000 for the initiative “Tus Valores” – “Your Values” – and plans to spent a total of at least $1 million.

In addition to advertising plans, the Latino Partnership plans to hold meetings with Latino community and faith-based leaders as part of its outreach initiative, in the hope of boosting Fiorina’s performance among Latino voters by 10 percent.

While Republicans nationally are struggling to court Latinos, Aguilar views Fiorina as a candidate who can connect with a community that still tilts conservative on some social issues.

“We believe in the California Senate race, in particular [Latinos] have a great opportunity to elect a person that represents their values,” said Aguilar, whose group is drawing support from other conservative groups such as the National Organization for Marriage and the anti-abortion Susan B. Anthony List.

On immigration, however – the issue that could define this election cycle for many Latinos – Fiorina has a trickier sales pitch to make. Aguilar argued that Fiorina’s support for longer-range immigration reform, in conjunction with border security enhancements, could be acceptable to Latino voters. SOURCE: POLITICO.COM
