So what do you wear to work when it's business casual? The worlds of casual and business casual workplace attire are merging everyday and it's hard to know from what company to what company the standards. Moreover, some big organizations may have departmental norms that are not consistent with other departmental norms. For example, in a large financial services organization, the shirt and tie mutual funds team might sit across the hall from the billing team and because the billing team does not have visits from clients can wear almost anything they want.
The norm has become business casual in most workplaces, especially in settings where customers and clients don't often visit. In institutional professions such as law firms, banking, and investment advising, formal attire is still normal. Non-client facing careers such as computer programming, graphic artist and book keeping tend to dress casually. While, department stores, manufacturing, and retail industries dress tend to dress a "uniformed" way though it might not though the employees may not consider it business attire.
In a survey performed by OfficeTeam, 56 percent of employees surveyed said that they prefer more relaxed dress codes. Yet, 41% in the same survey admitted they are unsure if what they are wearing is appropriate in their work place. ""As work attire skews more casual, the rules about acceptable office wear aren't always clear-cut. Besides following official company policies, employees should pay attention to the wardrobes of managers and colleagues. If you're uncertain about whether it's OK to wear something to work, it's best to play it safe by skipping it."," said Brandi Britton, a district president for OfficeTeam.
