America's Fit Queen 2017, Cori Magnotta here! I am so excited to share with you the amazing experience that I had at the 7th annual Women's Health Conference that was held on September 30th 2017. I was honored to have been asked to perform a hoop fitness routine as the opening entertainment and informative act. I had a few brave volunteers who got up and performed 'The Cupid Shuffle' with me. Everyone, including the pastor rocked their hula hoop! Performing in front of people is a passion of mine, but I am even more excited to motivate others to find fun through fitness! The theme of the prestigious event was #YoureWorthIt and I am thrilled to have had many people sign up for a complementary introduction class. Having been an overweight child myself, I am particularly happy to have inspired so many children to pick up a hula hoop. One little girl especially made my day and touched my heart. I taught her how to hula hoop in the hallway and then let her wear my America's Fit Queen crown. Before she left, I gifted her a hula hoop, she hugged me and said "I want to be just like you when I grown up!" That is not a feeling that will soon be forgotten! Coming up next, I am hosting a fundraiser for a family with a 9 year old girl who was recently diagnosed with cancer. Please check my website, www.hoopwithcori.com for more information on this event that will be happening in late November 2017.

Hula hooping, especially with the FXP Hula Hoop absolutely slims your waistline! The FXP Hula Hoop weight 2 pounds and is 42 inches in diameter, specifically designed to trim your waistline, shedding those unwanted inches! If you hooped 30 minutes a day, in a month, you would find yourself sporting 6-pack abs and at least 2–4 inches off your waistline. I hoop while watching TV! Don’t take my word for it! Visit www.hoopwithcori.com to learn how to purchase your very own FXP hula hoop or come to one of my classes! First class is always free!

Blast Your Belly Fat With a Hula Hoop

Hula hooping isn’t just for your waistline. Within days, you’ll find you are carrying significant less fat in your belly area! Hula hooping is one of the only exercises that combines fat burning cardio and muscle toning in one, easy and fun workout!

Hula Hoop Exercise Routine to Slim Your Waist in Minutes

I do recommend that individuals who are engaging in hoop fitness hoop for 30 minutes a day, it does not have to be all at once! You could get 10 minutes of hooping in before breakfast, bring the portable hoop to work and get another 10 minutes in after lunch and finally do the last 10 minutes in after dinner and you’re done! Congratulations on hooping for 30 minutes! 3- 10 minute intervals are extremely doable and much less intimidating for beginners.

hula hoop exercises for abs

It is fully possible to work every aspect of your abs using a hula hoop. Everyone has a ‘favorite direction’, the way you naturally hoop and a ‘2nd favorite direction’, the opposite way you naturally hoop. It may take some practice and getting used to, but hooping in both directions will completely work your abs muscles. In addition, soon you’ll be able to master more advanced moves, such as hooping higher on the waist and lower on the hips, truly making it a full body workout. In addition, I offer and hold a certification in Hoopasa, which is yoga using a hula hoop. In Hoopyasa, we perform floor exercises using the hoop that also engage the core and abdominal muscles.

What Are the Benefits of Exercising Abs With a Hula-Hoop?

There are so many benefits to exercising your abs using a hula hoop! First of all, it’s fun! I always say “It’s impossible to not smile which hula hooping!” (Go ahead and try it, I’ll wait) Now compare hula hooping to boring sit-ups. There is no comparison! Hula hooping is actually a more effective way to work your abs than doing sit-ups. Hooping for 10 minutes is the equivalent of running a 10 minute mile! Even with a standard toy hula hoop, you’ll burn 7 calories per minute. Use a fitness hoop, such as the FXP Hula Hoop and that number skyrockets to a possible 800 calories per hour! These are not made up claims, they are verified by the American Exercise Council. In addition to working your abs, hula hooping is great for those with leg injuries who are unable to walk or run, but still want a full body cardio workout. I have also been told by a chiropractor that hooping can be very therapeutic to those with certain back injuries. The hoop provides a massage like rhythm on the back with can be healing in some cases.

Cori Magnotta - FXP Hula Hoop Trainer

Hooping has been a part of Cori’s life for as long as she can remember. At 5 years old, she picked up a hoop for the first time at a town hula-hoop competition. Not only did she beat all of the kids that day, but the adults as well! Little did she know that the hoop would change her life forever!

Cori Magnotta

As a self-described “tall, lanky, awkward pre-teen,” Cori’s mother entered her in a beauty pageants to help build self-esteem. Many pageants have a talent portion that factors into the overall score- “I tried to perfect a traditional talent, but my singing was off-key and my tap dancing was off-beat,” says Cori Magnotta. Finally, Cori Magnottahad the idea to hula-hoop as her talent. “A lot of people laughed, saying no way could a hula-hoop ever beat a ballet performance; it had never been done before! Well, my hula-hoop talent was not only a favorite of the audience, but the judges as well.” Cori Magnotta certainly proved the nay-sayers wrong and she went on to win the titles of Miss Connecticut Teen, Miss Galaxy Teen and won the talent portion at America’s National Teenager.

Fast forward to adulthood – Cori Magnotta  shares that “After the birth of my son, I once again picked up a hoop to help me lose the pregnancy weight. Something was a little different this time, I was exhausted and found I could not hoop like I used to.” Cori Magnotta went consulted a doctor and was diagnosed with acute Hypothyroidism. Being Hypothyroid slows down the body’s entire metabolic process and makes it much easier to gain weight. Cori decided that instead of feeling sorry for herself, she was going to get in shape, but also inspire others to do the same!

At this pivotal point in Cori’s life, she says “That was when I found FXP® Fitness. Becoming a Certified FXP Hula Hoop® Instructor has changed my life in unimaginable ways! Shortly after obtaining my certification, I was awarded the title of Connecticut’s Fit Mrs. I used my state title to raise awareness about Hypothyroidism and share my excitement for the FXP Hula Hoop® system. After many weeks of hard work and changing one life at a time using a FXP Hula Hoop, I was awarded the title of America’s Fit Mrs.! I am thrilled to have the amazing opportunity to be a Certified FXP® Fitness Instructor and represent married women across the United States as we go on an incredibly fun fitness journey together!”

Cori’s energy is contagious and since this piece was written, she was also featured in a great piece by The Middletown Press! Cori teaches at Inner Circle Family Martial Arts Center and would love to have you in one of her classes – check out her “Hoop With Cori” teaching schedule if you are in the Portland, Connecticut area!

Each year, the average American gains 10 pounds between Halloween and New Year’s. Now is the time to solidify healthy habits and routines! First of all, always have healthy options available! It’s much more difficult to have will power when you are starving and your only option is fast food. Always carry some fruit or hunger reducing shake to help in a pinch! Trade high calorie soups for a low calorie broth such as chicken stock. Finally, count calories! It’s shocking how quickly calories can add up when you’re not playing attention! Remember to count all beverages as well! It’s very easy to drink your daily calorie allowance without even realizing it!

While it is impossible to out exercise a bad diet, fitness is very important. Many people join a gym every January and never go back despite having the best intentions. If you aren’t a gym person like I am, find something you truly enjoy doing and it will take the ‘work’ out of ‘workout’! I like unusual workouts. Amongst my favorites are Kangoo Jumps rebound shoes and Hula hoop fitness. I enjoyed hoop fitness so much that I became a Certified FXP Hoop Fitness Instructor! You can learn more about me and my fitness classes by going to www.hoopwithcori.com.

I wish you a wonderful and healthy start to the holiday season!

Sincerely,

Cori Magnotta

“Living with Schizophrenia: A Call for Hope and Recovery” is a half-hour documentary film that tells the story of three people who are living meaningful lives with schizophrenia, a chronic and potentially disabling brain disorder.  Visit  http://www.hopeandrecoveryfilm.com/videos/trailer.swf to view the documentary trailer.  The film sets out to increase understanding and to reduce the fear and stigma often associated with this mental health condition. About one percent of the US adult population, or 2 million, and approximately 24 million people globally are living with schizophrenia.

“‘Living with Schizophrenia’ highlights the stories that don’t make the headlines – the stories of hope and promise,” said Emily Abt, award-winning filmmaker and director of the film. “My grandmother struggled with schizophrenia, and making this documentary gave me new insights about what it is like to have this illness and overcome the obstacles in life that it presents.”

In the film, viewers journey with three individuals with schizophrenia to experience their daily struggles, personal insights, paths to the mental health recovery process, and the impact their illness has had on those who love them. “Living with Schizophrenia” delves into the lives of Ashley, who after finding effective treatment for her schizophrenia, returned to school and created a blog to share her story with others; Joshua, who was in and out of psychiatric hospitals for six years and now, following his path of mental health recovery, is dedicated to helping others living with the illness; and Rebecca, who spent a decade blaming herself for her diagnosis of paranoid schizophrenia and is now actively involved in her treatment process.

Ashley, Joshua, and Rebecca are joined in the film by their families and experts in schizophrenia, including community-based psychiatrist Rebecca Roma, MD, medical director of the Community Treatment Team at Mercy Behavioral Health in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Xavier Amador, PhD, clinical psychologist and founder and director of the LEAP Institute; and, Dave, president of the Georgia chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI). Throughout the film, they share their perspectives and reinforce the message of hope and self-acceptance for people living with schizophrenia.

Schizophrenia is a complex mental disorder whose cause eludes experts to this day.  Researchers have identified various risk factors for schizophrenia, including heredity, brain damage, and environmental factors such as social stress, isolation, and drug use.  The disease typically manifests as abnormal psychological functioning and disturbed behavior. There are currently no physical or lab tests that diagnose the disease; therefore, schizophrenia is diagnosed by the presence of symptom types.

“By sharing the powerful stories of Ashley, Joshua, and Rebecca, we can work to reduce the fear and reduce the stigma, just like we’ve done with so many other issues over the years,” said Dr. Roma. “Deep down inside, we’re all people with different struggles and I learn from my patients every day about the power of perseverance and hope.”

“Living with Schizophrenia” was funded and produced by Janssen, Division of Ortho-McNeil-Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Inc.  The people featured in the film present their own stories and ideas and were not compensated by Janssen to appear in the film. Janssen products are not named or promoted in the film.
